Etsy is rolling out Direct Checkout!

Thank the Lord, the day has come!!!! Etsy is FINALLY rolling out direct checkout to all of their shops. I cannot wait for this! For those of you that haven't seen the video, you will now finally be able to pay directly with a credit card on Etsy instead of going through PayPal. This is so exciting, I feel like I have been waiting forever for this because you always have the confused buyer who doesn't understand that PayPal isn't necessary. It's sad because you could lose that sale because people sometimes have the misconception that they cannot use Etsy.
Unfortunately it may take a month or two for them to reach it out to everyone but I will let you know as soon as my shops are updated with it.

I always answered that question when I was little as "a mommy." As a college student I wanted to be a writer, and now, I want to transition into a professional photographer.

Salisbury University on the Eastern Shore of Maryland ... I was a creative writing/ English major.

I love anything natural ... or old (as in vintage). I think the combination of the two is stunning.

Something with fashion/photography would be so fun ... jet-setting to Paris and Milan.

5.) How to you discover Etsy and what made you decide you wanted to sell handmade?
A friend sent me a link and I was hooked! I've always made stuff for fun in my spare time, so this was a natural progression.

1. What did you want to be when you grew up?
When I was younger I wanted to be a dentist, teacher, ice skater and a mom. One of those ambitions came true.

2. If you went to college where did you go and what was your major?
I went to a community college and was studying to be an elementary teacher. During that process I married the man of dreams, became a mom and as I entered into that new season my plans and hopes changed.

3. What are your favorite materials to work with?
Wool felt. I love the texture and color variety.

4. If you could have any other profession what would it be?
My husband and I have dreams of moving overseas for missionary work someday. Until that day comes I am so blessed to be creating beautiful keepsakes for people all over the world. There really is nothing else I would want to be doing right now.

5. How did you discover Etsy and what made you decide to sell on it?
I stumbled upon Etsy about 5 years ago and was immediately obsessed. At the time I couldn't even imagine opening my own Etsy shop. It was one of my 30 things to do before 30. A few years later when I made the decision to give handmade colectibles a go, Etsy was my first choice.

6. If you could go back in time and tell yourself one thing about selling on Etsy what would it be?
Don't get discouraged when certain ideas don't turn out as you'd hoped. Everything is a learning process. Keep on. Work hard. Do what works for you.

Midnight in Paris

For those of you who haven't seen this movie, run to the store or Netflix right now, it is to die for. For any art lover, history buff, or rom-com addict this movie is a must see. The cast is phenomenal and portray all of their roles with great passion.

This movie is chock full of artists, writers, and musicians who all lived and enjoyed Paris in the 1920's. I found my self gasping every 2 seconds as a new person appeared. I can't even imagine being thrown in that world with such great creative minds.
The music in this movie is also fantastic, I finally downloading the soundtrack last night off of iTunes for $10.00, totally worth it!

I promise this movie will not disappoint!

I bought a pair of pink earrings from Pretties By Meg at the Detroit Urban Craft fair for my sister for Christmas and she totally loved them. She had such a cute booth and her shop is fantastic. She takes great photos of her work which really make a difference in her shop.

1. WHat did you want to be when you grew up?
When I was real little, I wanted to be a "star," aka a singer and actress. In high school/college, I was leaning toward becoming an editor/writer.
2. If you went to college where did you go and what was your major?
I went to Central Michigan University and majored in English with a minor in Psychology.
3. What are your favorite materials to work with?
Pretty vintage beads and antiqued metals.

4. If you could be in any other profession what would it be?
Probably an interior designer/decorator or a music therapist.
5. How did you discover Etsy?
I discovered Etsy while planning my wedding about four years ago. I decided to sell on it around a year later, when I was at a day job that was boring me to death. I needed a creative outlet!
6. If you could go back in time and tell yourself anything about working on Etsy what would it be?
Hmm, that's a tough one. I think I would tell myself to not be timid about self-promotion, particularly through Twitter. It was awhile before I got started on that.

I wanted to be either a singer or a horse trainer....

I went to Massachusetts college of Art and Design and studied Graphic Design, my sister Shana went to Roger Williams University and studied Creative Writing.

My favorite material to work with currently is fabric. Especially in screen printing, there is a huge adrenaline rush when you see the results of your first screen pull, you never know what your going to get and the possibilities of turning hand printed fabrics into something functional are endless and exciting.

4.If you could be anything else what would you be?
I've always been super interested in Archeology....I hope to retire to the desert and dig for things.

5. How did you discover Etsy and what made you want to sell on it?
I discovered Etsy through a co-worker and immediately it got my gears turning. I had a lot of prints that I had done previously and thought what a great opportunity to get some out into the world.

6. If you could go back in time and give yourself some helpful advice what would it be?
Patience. You never know whats going to sell and you never really know when, patience is now a refined personal quality of mine :)

I had a really nice day today, I went to lunch with some of my friends from school that I hadn't seen in a few weeks because of break; and then I spent the rest of the day with my sister. We went to a dollar store to get some stuff and I saw a rack of those disguise masks with the nose attached to glasses and a mustache. I started cracking up and insisting that I buy her one. I did and we spent about an hour driving around random places while she wore it and stuck her face out the window at people. We got A LOT of weird looks, some laughs, and a couple double takes. That dollar was definitely well spent. Hahah.

I fell in love with Izabella's shop when I cam across one of her posters that said "Oh Darling, let's be Adventurers." I think this is such a gorgeous statement. All of her sayings are so happy and fresh so adding her to this series was a no brainer. She is super nice and easy to work with too!
1. What did you want to be when you grew up?
I was artistic growing up, but I always thought I would go into science and become a Marine Biologist.

2. If you went to college where did you go and what was your major?
I went to Barnard College in New York City and majored in Urban Studies and Architecture.

3. What are your favorite materials to work with?
My favorite materials are acrylic, textured paper, metal and wood. I like to work with very simple materials.

4. If you could have any other profession what would it be?
Before starting to work full time on Fifi du Vie, I worked in merchandising which was a lot of fun. If I had any other profession now, I would love to be a furniture designer or art teacher (or maybe both!).

5. How did you discover Etsy and what made you decide to sell on it?
I started selling jewelry on Etsy at first many years ago under a different shop name. I came across the site while shopping for gifts and immediately loved it. The supportive community, ease of use and awesome customers made it an easy choice to use as a platform when I started Fifi du Vie in 2010.

6. If you could go back in time and tell yourself one thing about selling on Etsy what would it be?
I would tell myself to plan ahead more. I do a lot of trial and error with photographs, sales and designs. I wish I had set my line, photographs, and calendar before I ever launched the site.

1. What did you want to be when you grew up?
Since as long as I could remember , I am guessing about the age of 5, I wanted to be either a cop or superhero. In high school, I joined the junior Police Explorers where we lived, and I learned CPR and rode in cruisers with the police, I thought I was so cool.
2. If you went to college where did you go and what was your major?
After I graduated high school, I was walking past a pretty large dental laboratory that wasn't too far from our house to go to my part time job at a shoe store. I saw a small note on the door that read "Help Wanted, Inquire Within". So I inquired and was given a very mediocre office job, but learned many tasks in the lab itself. I was 17 years old . I fell in love with making teeth ie: crowns & bridges almost immediately and delved into all the how-to videos they had in their training room. I would go in at 5 a.m. just to watch 2 hours worth of tutorials.
After 2 years of on on the job self taught training, I took a better position elsewhere, and then again 2 more years later. It was at that third lab that I learned the skill of dental implants. I took college course credits and attended seminars in dental technology around the country.
At 23 years old, I managed a dental lab of 7 others all older than me, and bought my first home.
By the time I was 27, I had opened my own dental lab and that is still my passion today, however now, I have semi-retired and jewelry is my second passion.
3. What are your favorite materials to work with?
A lot of metalwork is involved in making gold or palladium crowns, and Im a master at it. In fact I dabbled in jewelry making in my early 20's because making a gold ring is the exact same process as making gold crowns.

4. If you could have any other profession what would it be?
There is no other profession on the face of this earth that I would rather be doing than either making people smile by giving them new teeth or by giving them new jewels. I think the stars were aligned perfectly that day I read that sign so long ago. Its as if it were meant to be and everyday of my life I truly believe I am the luckiest person alive. Many people cannot find 1 passion which pays their bills, I have 2.
5. How did you discover Etsy and what made you decide to sell on it?
My neighbor pushed me onto Etsy after I had made her some rings with her old & broken jewelry, I was smitten at first site. I thought "Now this is the place where I need to be".
6. If you could go back in time and tell yourself one thing about selling on Etsy what would it be?
Getting started on Etsy can sometimes be sour grapes, when you get that first sale , you're like "squeeee!" , but then nothing .... and you wait and begin to lose hope. If I could go back & give myself some advice, I would say "Hey Chy, give it just 6 months, it will take off, have patience girl".
One more tip of advice would be to do as much self promoting as possible, use all your avenues like facebook and myspace , join some Etsy teams, post sales, events, etc...Chin up! ;)

Chain Chain Chained is one of my newest favorites on Etsy. I discovered her shop when I took a business card from her awesome booth at the Detroit Urban Craft Fair and have been in love with her stuff ever since. Even the way everything was displayed at the fair was awesome.

1. What did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a teacher, a doctor, a mother and an artist.
2. If you went to college where did you go and what was your major?
I went to College for Creative Studies in Detroit, MI. I majored in Graphic Design, but my favorite classes were printmaking, glass sculpture, book binding and silkscreen.
3. What are your favorite materials to work with?
I love working with metal, obviously. Mostly, I love hunting for treasures. If it's unusual, curious, and has a sense of history, I'll work it into my collection.
4. If you could have any other profession what would it be?
That's a tough one, I would like to continue on this creative endeavour, if I had a great voice, I'd pursue music. I don't know, I'm pretty happy doing what I'm doing.
5. How did you discover Etsy and what made you decide to sell on it?
I first heard of Etsy through a good friend who was making t-shirts, she encouraged me to list something, that was back in 2006. I've been an Etsy addict every since!
6. If you could go back in time and tell yourself one thing about selling on Etsy what would it be?
Hmm, that is a tough one. I guess, I would tell myself you get out of it what you put into it.

1. What did you want to be when you grew up?
I was home schooled so I had a lot of time for daydreaming and reading books.
I wanted to be a chemist, a pilot and a school teacher all at once. I was playing the violin and that became soon a career plan. But I was always drawing, sewing, making up plays and riding my bike instead of practicing.

2. If you went to college where did you go and what was your major?
I actually got a degree in violin and taught and played in orchestra for a few years, before realising it wasn't what I wanted to do everyday.

3. What are your favorite materials to work with?
Everything, I have a particular feel about materials and most of the time the material gives me the idea to create something. I usually go and hunt for nothing in particular. I sometimes come back with leather scraps, sometimes with antique lace. My studio/room is filled to the brim with old things awaiting to be transformed.

4. If you could have any other profession what would it be?
I would like to be a primary school teacher or an anthropologist.

5. How did you discover Etsy and what made you decide to sell on it?
By accident browsing the web. I thought about selling the things that I made in shops but I was a little too shy and unorganized. But having a full time job and no plans, it took me a little while to get started, I only figured out what I really liked to do a few months ago.

6. If you could go back in time and tell yourself one thing about selling on Etsy what would it be?
I've tried out a lot of different things and find it hard to fit all my ideas into one shop so guess I would have started with some kind of plan. But that's not the way I do things so I guess it was all necessary mistakes.
But I'm happy to do what I like all day and that's all that matters.

The New and Improved Robin's Egg Designs

I made the leap! I decided that instead of Constellation Jewelry Co.( which I may use later at some point) I would just go ahead and use my empty Robins Egg Designs and keep the same name. I have started to add my newest merchandise to it and I am LOVING IT so far! Yay!

This jewelry is much more for adults, with all metals, and muted colors. As you can see in my shop title I could not decide the style so I just picked a bunch of words that describe it.

Change of Shop?

I haven't blogged in so long other than my Design Sponge application. I had started to abandon this little guy after my obsession with Tumblr. I just love how easy it is, but all my Etsy people haven't carried over from here to there. I have been considering some changes to my shops lately. I am thinking since Robins Egg has been sitting empty since the summer I may put it to good use. I am thinking of changing the name to Constellation Jewelry Co. I would use it to sell my more handcrafted and unique jewelry that I have made pieces for in the metal shops and jewelry studio at school. I want to make necklaces and such with more found objects from antique stores and things made with copper and brass and steel. I want to create for adult friendly jewelry, no buttons! haha.

Right now I am making more textile pieces for DWB and doing some beading. Our dining room table is currently a small mountain of beads and fabric. My mom wasn't too happy about that one.

We also finally took the leap and are painting our ugly paneled upstairs. It is going to be a pretty brown called Mesa Taupe by Behr. I can't wait till it's finished because it has been such a long time coming. It took about 5 years for us to convince my dad to paint it because it is such an enormous job!

Recent Happenings

So I started college this week, it is exciting and scary at the same time. I have been trying to figure everything out and convert my Etsy shops to a new place and find the post office etc.. We will see how it goes trying to run it out of my dorm room but I am determined to make it work!

Since I am in school now I will only be shipping on Thursdays and Saturdays. This is the most convenient for me because I have both of those days off and will be able to spend some quality time working on shop things and wrapping up orders to ship.

For those of you who see things in my shop once and never again, this may change. I am going to try to be making more things that I can make multiples of, like best sellers so that more than one person can have one of my pieces. I have had a few pieces that have been doing really well like the art student pendant(not in various colors) and < a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/69493099/the-irish-hills-bead-link-necklace> the irish hills necklace.

Another thing is I am working on some new pieces that will be including more textiles, yarn, ribbons, fabric etc... in different ways so stay tuned for those!

I don't know if you have noticed yet but I took thebotanicalbee in a new direction. I decided to use my poor empty 3rd shop to sell vintage.

I looovve old things and I always find so many little treasures at garage sales, estate sales, and antique stores so I figured I better share some of these things before I can't walk in my room let alone set something on a table.

I tend to collect a lot of clutter because I have letting go issues with my knick knacks. haha.

I am so addicted. It is officially a bad thing. Do any of you use StumbleUpon? I love it, you can just discover so many new things that you would have never seen otherwise. I have already discovered some great new blogs, artists and games and such. If you haven't already tried it I highly recommend you do unless you can't spend hours on end on the computer when you have other things to do. So this week is my last full week of high school and then next week I just have 3 days of finals. Then I'm done, done! That just blows my mind. I know people say high school goes by fast but this was nuts. I can't even believe it. I feel like this year lasted about 2.5 seconds.
I am happy and sad at the same time. Happy because I get to get away from some of the annoying people I have spent 14 years of school with. When you live in a small town EVERYONE knows EVERYONE and it tends to get old. I get to finally do what I want and go to CCS next year wooooo! I can't wait for that. And also sad because I have to leave some of my friends of 14 years and after college its Hello! Real world. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. ;)

i heart garage sales

I absolutely love garage sales! I love finding little treasures like this periwinkle citrate of magnesia bottle and this teal ice cream dish. I love little old trinkets and these were beauties.

It's hard to find bottles that have the lids on them still and this one was such a pretty shade of blue that I haven't seen before.

I couldn't resist this ice cream dish that I got for a quarter. The lady asked for a nickel so I gave her a quarter and she tried to give me change, haha.

I own a massive amount of buttons but I have been using fewer in my designs lately and I have come to discover that dyeing buttons is soo much more enjoyable!
I love it because you can make any color you could want. So I will be dyeing a lot more buttons from now on and selling the unique colors in RobinsEgg. I have 3 colors available in there right now and the colors are so rich and beautiful.
So because of this I am clearing out my personal button collection and only keeping my absolute favorites for my jewelry and bobby pins.

I got back from Florida yesterday and it is so cold here! I miss the warm sunshine, it is super dreary here and it SNOWED, yes snowed yesterday. Well at least I get to get back to my jewelry making, I miss it when I don't have something to work on. I got a couple of bead shipments including some really pretty moonstone beads that are different colors so I will be making and listing soon.

Also today, I saved these sad little dandelions that decided to come out of the ground a little too early from the cold and stuck them in an apple shaped glass jar. Stay warm little dudes; yes I tend to feel bad for flowers.

Today I took a nap, this usually gives me some ideas, for some reason when I am just lying there or as I fall asleep I can think of some ideas. Today zippo, nothing. Boredom. GAH! I just got some new beads and chain in the mail the other day and that isn't even helping. I don't really know what to do to get out of this funk. Sitting on the computer doing nothing probably isn't helping either, but I'm pretending. I don't even want to make a treasury right now, and I ALWAYS want to make treasuries. Haha.
It also doesn't really help that it is rainy, windy, and down right depressing outside, maybe that is the problem. I am going to blame the weather...

It's a huge dream but I really hope I can get there one day.

I hope to someday see- Detroit come back from the terrible condition that some of the areas are in, there are absolutely beautiful old houses with extraordinary character that are abandoned and falling apart and it is so sad.

Vampire Diaries, on hiatus again

I'm a hardcore VD fan and sadly it went on hiatus yet again. This seems to happen to so often with this show. ( I think this is the 3rd time?) It doesn't come back till April 7th, how can I wait that long?!
If you don't watch the show you should, it actually has a really great plot and even if you just feeling like seeing some hott guys with nice abs it's great too. ;)
Isabelle, Elena's mom, is going to be coming back in April so there is a whole disater waiting to happen. It's going to be so good!

Detroit Auto Show

I forgot to post these pics! I don't know if there are any other car lovers out there, I grew up with my muscle car obsessed dad and it has rubbed off on me. I have such differing tastes. Buttons and cars.( I actually found this car that had a button on it and I almost lost it I was so excited!) I went to the Auto show with my dad when it was here and we had dinner at Fish Bones in Detroit. They have the best bread and butter in the history of the world, like ask for another bread basket so you can take it home good.

I made another Harry Potter Treasury!
I am going to Harry Potter World for spring break this year and I am SOSOOSOSOSOSOSOSO excited. It is going to be epic. So on account of my little adventure I am rereading all of the books to get in the spirit and because my best friend desperately wants me too. I am getting so into it again. There are so many details that you forget and that the movies leave out that just add to the story so much. I finished The Sorcerer's Stone the other day so I got in the treasury making mood.
I am also listening to Hedwig's Theme while I type this. Hmmm.. I am loving Harry twice as much the second time around considering I haven't read the first book since third grade....(bad bad me)

Oh Etsy, why must you hurt me

Now don't get me wrong, I LOVE Etsy and I love that I get the opportunity to sell the things I make in a great environment. But Dear Lord, these changes that they have been making seem to be a disaster.
They have deleted 5, count them 5, of our Forum sections. GAHHHHH I love, well loved, the forums. Now we have lost many of the places where we get to meet the fabulous people that use Etsy, discuss news topics, promote our shops and the Techniques and Materials section.
Also the Search changes are just blasphemy. I personally noticed immediately when something had changed because I can't find a thing! My shop is virtually unsearchable now and views have plummeted. I have seen a few forum posts in the Ideas section and people seem to be feeling the same way.
I typed in "house pillow" trying to find these cute pillows with embroidered houses I have seen a few times and I didn't see ONE pillow with houses on it.
So thank you for listening to this rant.

Thomas Crown Affair

This is me blogging from my moms computer because mine is slowly collapsing.
I lovvvve this movie.( The 1999 version not the one from the 60's) I watched it with my mom a couple years ago and it became an instant favorite. It's about a man named Thomas Crown who is wealthy and is accused of stealing a Monet from the an art museum in New York. Pierce Brosnan(LOVE him) and Renee Russo star in it.
It's a must see if you like romantic/mystery/art movies. :)

Each year some of the seniors get to paint a mural of a famous painting in the hallways at our school and I get to do one this year so I chose to paint the Monet that Thomas Crown supposedly steals. Yay! It took me forever to decide what I wanted to paint because I didn't want to something stereotypical but most of the paintings up are I think because the school wants students to be able to recognize them. I thought, perfect! I am still painting a Monet but it actually has some other meaning to me because I love this movie so much. Hopefully I will start it next semester. When I'm done I will post pictures!

I updated my policies today, it was about time that I update a few things.
From now on I will not be breaking up listings to make custom orders. I have had a bunch of people ask me to do this in the past and I have done it for them but it really is not a good thing for me as I loose 2 listings for one and end up wasting supplies and time.

I am still happy to do custom orders for anyone ( I really do love doing them! Just not in this sense.)but please (oh pretty please) make them CUSTOM orders instead of lets pick and choose. I hope this will make it a little easier for me. Please allow 2-4 days for your order to be completed.I always feel bad because it ends up taking me longer to make orders for people also and I don't like making people wait for something they are excited for.

Now this is hands down the strangest button I have ever seen. I discovered in a mix of vintage buttons I got from Treasure Mart and thought it was weird and I showed my mom, who pointed out that it looked like boobs, haha cracks me up. It does! I assume it is just a factory mistake or maybe it used to be the eyes of some stuffed animal but to me, it just looks like boobs.

Trip to Ann Arbor pt.2

The Treasure Mart is this really cool jam-packed antique and resale shop. The have so much stuff that you can barely walk but it was totally worth it because I found some really great treasures.

I found these glass bottles and bowl that have so much character. I am a sucker for a cool colored glass bottles. I have a whole collection of them but that is a whole other post. haha. The tallest has the seasons around it with a sun,flower, snowflake and leaf. The other bottle looks like it was in a fire or something because the mouth and bottom are both kind of melted.

I also got this beautiful sterling silver ring for only $10.

Gotta love a good deal!

Trip to Ann Arbor pt.1

My mom, sisters, and I went to Downtown Ann Arbor for the day to do some shopping. The main reason we went was to go to Treasure Mart and antique store they have in town.(Treasure mart is in the next post.)

Hollander's Paper store(Makes me wish I still scrapbooked, they have so many beautiful papers.)

This display is outside on of my favorite stores there, Found. They have amix of vintage and new items and the decorating inside it is beautiful.

The KerryTown building that has all of the shops has so much character,they even painted the elevator shaft.

This mural decorates one of the buildings across the street from Acme Merchantile.

These are my favorite! I couldn't think of what to name them and what they reminded me of but Bell peppers of course! yay!

I have the 50% off sale going in my shop which will hopefully be success, I haven't have had much luck with sales in the past but this I have been promoting like nobodies business. I have an ad running on Craftcount.com and I have been in the forums, Facebook, and Twitter a lot. So sorry if I have been driving anyone crazy! It is not intentional :).
And since I have been trying to get rid of some of the old items I have been making tons of new things too. I have remade some sets that sold a while back like Lemonade Stand and Van Gogh inspired and have been making button necklaces that I hope to get out in every color.
Believe it or not my button supply is dwindling so I placed another order the other day and I have a huge shipment coming in. I always steal some of the ones that are for Robins Egg so I can make my own stuff.
Tomorrow I am going with my family and my sisters friend to the Treasure Mart which is antique store about an hour away from us so that I can find some cool vintage supplies to incorporate in my stuff.I will definitely post pictures either tomorrow night or Wednesday.

Christmas with the family

I am spending Christmas with my family today. Every year we get together with my grandma, aunt, and uncle that live about an hour away from us to celebrate Christmas. We have brunch and exchange gifts it's really a lot of fun. My grandma is the best cook and it's always exciting to see what she makes for us each time we visit.
It snowed here again last night, just a few inches but enough to mess the roads up once again. Oh well, it's Christmas time right?

Christmas time is here!

The Christmas season is finally here! Christmas time is my absolute favorite time of the year. Giving gifts, making cookies, decorating the tree, holiday crafts and spending time with family are the best things ever. I spent a few hours yesterday with my twin sisters and we made spritz cookies in all different shapes. We have this old cookie gun that my mom has had forever. It's always interesting interpreting the instructions that are all in weird measurements and 30 years old. I ended up going online for a recipe but they turned out really good!

I learned this week that the Treasury has changed and that you can make as many as you want! I talked to my friend and she said that apparently it has been like that since the summer but I never even knew. I am so happy that it's like that because it was such a pain trying to catch the openings at obscure hours of the day. I mean come on, let's be realistic. A treasury is not worth being up at 4:17 in the morning.

I have been neglecting my 3rd shop, thebotanicalbee for quite some time now. I made it so that I could sell some of my artwork but creating and listing artwork is a huge process; let alone trying to figure out shipping costs. That's a nightmare. So I am going to keep the few smaller, light weight items that I have in there and maybe add a few every so often. Instead I am going to sell paper goods( like handstamped tags, bookmarks, and cards and such} and felt brooches. I really love working with felt and I have made a few starter pieces(pictured), that I think are really cute.

I feel as thought I am always busy now and I mean always. I am grateful for this because I guess its better than being bored right? I have hired my sister to help me with Etsy,so that I can keep up with everything without my head flying off.
